A work of Niklas Edlund erotic friend fiction. Enjoy!

Chapter One
The Key and the Stone

Smedley was mixing some very interesting venoms when the door to his laboratory creaked open.

“Smedley?” a small voice asked, “I am in need of a potion, I think.”

The wizard turned to face his visitor. “Prince Niklas! What can I brew for you?”

The boy looked concerned. “I have not been sleeping well for several nights. I have been having the same dream.”

The young boy wandered into the lab, absently touching the bottles and jars that filled Smedley’s many tables, “In the dream…I’m lost in a fog, it grows thicker and thicker until I can’t see or even move. Then, a hand reaches through the fog to help lead me out, but for some reason I am afraid to take it. I wake up startled each time.”

242

The young prince faced the old wizard with pleading eyes. “Please, can you give me a drought that will give me pleasant dreams? Or even no dreams at all would be welcome.”

The wizard smiled. “Ah lad, I know these symbols. Soon you are to be king, and your sleeping mind has realized this. Manhood is upon you, lad. That is what stalks you in your dreams. No potion will cure that.”

The boy sighed. Niklas was often reminded these days by his mother, his chambermaid, his food taster--the entire castle-- of the duties that would soon fall upon him. But these dreams…? There was more to them than just his misgivings, he knew it.

“And there is another thing, Smedley. In my dream I am sometimes holding that odd key you once gave me. What does that mean to you?”

Smedley paused and stroked his beard. “That crystal key, you say?”

Niklas waited as the wizard affected a serious tone. “That key you would have never remembered again had you not seen it in now your dreams. In the morning you must journey to the mountains and bring it to Randlyn the Mage. He will know what it is for.”

Prince Niklas was startled. He certainly had not expected that his dreams could have meant this much! “Smedley, what is this about?”

“Young Prince, your kingship is in peril!” Smedley said gravely. “Go to sleep now. You must depart at first light.”

Smedley’s stare pushed the boy out the door with no more questions. Alone, the wizard looked down at his hands and sighed. Yes, Prince Niklas would leave tomorrow.

And afterwards, he would never see him again.

…

That night, again the dream of fog. In his dream Prince Niklas held the key tight to his chest. As always, a hand reached out to him from the mist, but this time it only beckoned. Niklas walked forward, not afraid now but curious. Through the fog he saw a keyhole, just a keyhole attached to nothing but air. The boy awoke clear-headed and eager.

The prince dressed, and then took down from a shelf the box that held his strange key, a gift from Smedley when he had turned five. The key was narrow and made of violet crystal. The cross section of its grooved shaft made a star, and the tip was wickedly sharp. Niklas now remembered: he had pricked his finger pressing it against that tip. A tiny, star-shaped scar remained. Smedley was right: Niklas had not thought of the key once since that time.

Prince Niklas departed the castle on his horse without even arousing the stable hands. By noon he had passed the borders of Wineland and was en route to the Mountains of Oblivion. Hours later he and his horse had made their way halfway up a treacherous path to where Niklas knew Randlyn the Mage ought to be, but then the path narrowed. Niklas tied his mount to a tree and went the remainder of the way on foot.

Past many sentinel rocks that nearly made the trail unpassable, Prince Niklas finally reached the hidden plateau that led to the Cave of Glass where mysterious crystals grew and glowed. Here was the source of Randlyn’s power, and therefore, where he expected Randlyn to appear if he disturbed the space.

“Randlyn Darkwolf!” Prince Niklas cried out, “Show yourself!” Niklas touched one of the many crystals that grew from the rock near the mouth of the cave, knowing that Randlyn could feel the presence of any intruder.

An hour passed, and then the sound of feet dashing across stone disturbed Niklas, who had been sitting and contemplating the strange turn of events in his life. When he turned, he saw a large wolf, dark as shadow, but with eyes that flickered like blue flame.

Niklas smiled. “Randlyn! Where were you for so long?”

The wolf now stood on its hind legs, its forelimbs straightening, toes becoming fingers. A shroud of dark wind wrapped around the creature and then blew away. Randlyn the Mage stood before Niklas now, a long-haired boy barely older than Niklas, naked but for a wolf pelt draped over his head and shoulders. Yet the boy’s eyes burned blue just as the wolf’s had.

243

“I was hunting and killing rabbits in the forest below,” Randlyn said as he circled Niklas, “And I was having a good time of it before someone trespassed in my sanctum.”

Randlyn sounded unexpectedly cross. Niklas decided to let it pass. “Wineland might be expanding. I thought this place might make for a nice tennis court!”

Randlyn crossed his arms. “You are here on a serious matter, I can feel it, even if you cannot. What brings you, Prince Niklas?”

Niklas dropped his humor. He told Randlyn about his dreams and showed him the key.

“So it is this.” Randlyn said after a moment of thought. “Wait here”

Randlyn entered the cave, Niklas could barely conceive how the boy’s bare flesh would not be pierced a hundred times by the sharp crystals that grew in all directions. But minutes later the mage returned, unscratched.

In each hand Randlyn held an opened geode, their surfaces smooth and flat, halos of color spreading from the jagged centers.

Randlyn stood before Niklas, and the stone beneath his feet rose, lifting him a foot off the ground, fresh crystals sprouting around the short pedestal.

“Pick one of these stones. They are your destiny.”

Niklas shook his head, baffled. “What… what do you mean? Randlyn, why are you being so dire?”

Now as Randlyn spoke, his voice seemed to come from all around Niklas, from the rocks and the clouds. “Your kingdom is imperiled. It is imperiled because it may soon be ruled by a cowardly king!”

Prince Niklas felt a lump in his throat, suddenly feeling more naked than Randlyn. It was as if his secret fears about ruling were known everywhere.

“No”, said Randlyn “Your most dangerous fears are those not even known to you!”

Niklas gasped! Had the mage read his mind?

“These stones are your destiny. Both lead to a throne, both lead to your kingdom’s doom, but only one leads the way out of it. Choose.”

Niklas could tell there would be no further explanation, and he now knew that Smedley had expected him to be put to this test.

The geode in Randlyn’s right hand was pear-shaped, the milky ribbons of color spreading like a butterfly’s wings. At the center of the stone, pink crystals formed a vertical split.

In his left hand, the rock was round, rose colored at the edges turning bright red at the center, where a small cavity lay.

Niklas extended his hand, first unclear, then sure that he was meant to pick the stone in Randlyn’s right hand. Sure… that he was meant to.

But not sure that he wished to.

Feeling the shame of Randlyn’s charge of cowardice, Niklas grabbed the stone from the mage’s left hand before he could second-guess himself. He stared at it, his face reflecting in the polished surface. He poked the hole in its center curiously with his scarred fingertip. This was the right stone.

But wait… what was that about his kingdom being doomed?

Niklas looked up. “Randlyn, I…”

He was alone.

The prince stood and called for the mage but heard nothing except the wind.

Niklas stared at the stone, touched it and turned it. What did it mean?

The boy turned to go back the way he had come, but then a thought occurred. He looked again at the stone, the shape of the small cavity. Star shaped.

Niklas withdrew his key and placed the tip of it in the center of the stone. A moment or two of twisting, and then… yes! With some resistance, the key slipped neatly in-between the crystals.

244

The prince turned the key, and at first a clicking sound made him fear he had snapped it. Instead, the stone split, the surface flipping up like a lid, held to the other half by some cleverly disguised hinge.

Niklas was amazed at what he saw. On the bottom half of the exposed surface, the natural patterns of the geode formed an unmistakable image of a face, a sleeping boy. Niklas thought it must be a painting, but the image was undeniably part of the rock.

On the top portion, the underside of the “lid”, another image, not at all like the one below. Niklas didn’t know who the boy was, but he recognized this likeness. Its twin rose above the horizon, visible even from where Niklas stood now.

“The White Spire,” Niklas whispered.

(To be continued!)

"Ahhh, I'm sorry, Morik," Fabian said, feeling a little bit sad for Morik. "You know we can't take you there. Besides, even if they didn't notice you're green, I don't think there'd be a way to get you a visa no matter what, much less permission for you to grow up with us!

"That's not fair!" Morik said. "Couldn't they just see I'm an orphan, a good person, and I have no way to get back to my planet, so there's no way to get a visa? It's common sense."

"I'm afraid not, Morik. There's no room for common sense I'm afraid," Fabian said with brutal honesty.

"I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to stop Santa Clause," Martin said. "He must fly over half a dozen countries or more."

"Who's Santa Claus?" Morik asked, bewildered.

"He's that guy in a red suit," Martin replied.

"Green suit in some countries," Fabian added savvily.

"He's the one that brings all those toys!" Martin said enthusiastically.

"Toys??" Morik looked up suddenly. "He brings toys?"

"Yes!" Martin went on, more enthusiastically than ever. "He brought me some toy cars last year!, and Niklas got some action figures!"

"Why does he wear red, or green in some countries?" Morik went on, intrigued.

"Well, in most countries, he wears red, but both red and green are Christmas colors," Fabian offered.

"Who does he give the toys to?" Morik asked, innocently.

"To children!" Martin continued.

"Really?" Morik asked, impressed. "Where can I find Santa?"

"At the North Pole!" Martin stated.

"Well, how do the kids get the toys if he's at the North Pole? It's kind of far away, isn't it?" Morik asked, worried.

"He comes here every Christmas eve!" Martin ended.

"When is that?"

"It's not until around the end of December." Jason offered.

"The end of December? I can't wait that long! Do you think he might give me a toy?"

"Yes, Morik. We'll make sure he gets you a toy," Fabian said, tenderly, glancing at Jason."

"Time to go to bed!" Mrs. Waitaweill's voice could be heard from downstairs.

"Ok!" said Jason. "Thanks for letting us all stay here!"

"No problem! It's Christmas vacation. Now lights out!"

"Ok mom!," Fabian's voice wafted down the stairs.

Morning found Fabian and Jason sleeping soundly. Jason had a goofy smile on his face, like he was dreaming about chocolate, or something. Not so for Morik. He had dreamed about toys enough for the entire year, and was up bright and early with the prospect of one for Christmas. Maybe even more than one if he was really lucky. Since the other boys were asleep, he decided to go downstairs to see if breakfast might be ready a little early. It wasn't, but Morik had more important things on his mind.

"Mrs. Waitaweill, how does Santa get all the toys here?" Morik asked, all of a sudden. "Does he bring them all by himself?"

213

"No, he has lots of elves that help him with the toys too!" she answered, with a smile.

"What are elves?" Morik asked, puzzled.

"Oh, I forgot you don't know those things," Mrs. Waitaweill responded. "They're little people with pointy ears that help Santa with all the toys each Christmas."

"Really?" Morik asked.

"Sure.... Isn't it a little cold to be running around in your underwear?" Mrs. Waitaweill asked, changing the subject.

"No, it's warm in here. It's out there that worries me. It got really cold the last time I went into the forest."

"Well, just bundle up a little, and make sure you wear a heavy coat."

"I don't have a coat," replied Morik.

"Oh, that's right, I forgot. Listen, I was meaning to give you this at Christmas, but maybe I should give it to you now," stated Mrs. Waitaweill, thoughtfully.

"They're red!" Morik noted happily.

"Yes, and they come with matching pants. I hope they fit."

"Oh, they fit fine," Morik enthused, jumping into the pants on the spot, followed by the coat, without any shirt underneath.

"That's not exactly how I thought you'd wear them, but I just glad you will wear them for a change. I hoped you'd like them."

"I love them!" Morik blurted out, with more than characteristic enthusiasm for such things. "And they come with boots too!"

"Yes. I thought you could use them will all this cold, traipsing around the woods and things. Besides, you're always coming here at night, when it's coldest. The boots have bells on the toes, but you can take them off if you want. It's only held with velcro," she added. "They were only added as kind of a Christmas decoration. You know, to kind of get in the spirit of Christmas."

"Thank you!" Morik said, hugging Mrs. Waitaweill tightly. "Mrs. Waitaweill?" he asked, remembering what he'd been thinking about all night. Is it true that before Christmas I can only see Santa at the North Pole?"

214

"Not unless you saw him at the mall," Mrs. Waitaweill answered, absent mindedly, now thinking about starting breakfast.

"Santa Claus is going to be at the mall???" he asked, incredulously.

"Sure. He'll be there starting this morning," she answered, nonchalantly. Gee, you really look Christmassy, all green and red!"

"Yes, I do, said Morik, pensively, a funny look on his face. Ok. Thanks! Well I guess I'll be going!" he said suddenly. At that, he stepped out into the cold, completely forgetting the sweater, and the pair of jeans he'd arrived in the night before.

A while later, the other boys arose to the smell of breakfast cooking. "Mom, have you seen Morik?" Fabian asked.

"Yes, he said he said he had to go. He left really fast."

"He left last night?" Fabian inquired, puzzled.

"No, he left this morning. I didn't even get a chance to offer him breakfast!"

"Mom, he comes here at night. He can't go out there in the morning. He's green for heaven's sake! They'll have the news truck here before he knows what hit him!"

"Oh my gosh! I'd forgotten about that - I'm so used to seeing him, I don't even think about it!" Mrs. Waitaweill admitted, suddenly looking worried.

"How long ago did he leave, mom?"

"Just a little while ago," she said. He couldn't have gotten very far yet. Not in this weather."

"I'm going to go see if I can track him down," offered Fabian.

"I'll go too," Jason voluntered.

"Martin, you stay here and watch the news with my mom," Fabian added.

"I always have to do all the boring stuff, just because I'm the smallest," grumbled Martin.

"If somebody sees Morik, I'm sure it won't be boring, Martin," Fabian chided, "and somebody has to. What if the news discovers him first?"

"Ok. I'll stay here and watch the stupid news," Martin conceded.

"Well, there's no way I'm just staying here to see what happens," Mrs. Waitaweill asserted, stubbornly. "I'm as worried as you are. Maybe more! Besides, I can drive, Mr. too big for your britches."

"I don't think that will help. I know all the places Morik goes. I don't think he'll take the beaten path where a car could drive. You'd just slow us down. Besides, we're going to try to follow his footprints."

"Well, he'll probably be frozen in them," came Jason's voice from the stairs. "He left his shoes in our room. His pants and shirt are there too."

"Mom, you let Morik go out there in this weather - naked?! Do you realize how cold it is out there??"

"Now listen, young man. Don't take that tone with me. Just because I'm older doesn't mean I'm stupid! I gave him a coat and boots first." Fabian raised his eyebrows. "and pants," Mrs. Waitaweill added, indignantly. "I swear, I do have an IQ!"

215

""You got Morik to wear a coat? Fur and all? Way to go mom. I thought I'd never get him to wear one."

"He didn't have one," Mrs. Waitaweill interrupted, "and it had fake fur inside, but it's still pretty warm. "Besides, he liked it - a lot! It was red and I said he looked Christmassy. He seemed to really like that idea."

"Christmassy?"

"Yes, all red and green."

"Oh I guess you have a point."

"Fabian," Jason prompted, "we better stop talking and get going!"

"You're right," Fabian relented. "Let's go. Now for real, mom, you should watch the news. You can watch one channel, and Martin another in the other room. If the news finds out about him, we probably won't know about it, so you'll need to high tail it to wherever he is and do some fast talking; and if he isn't on the news, someone needs to be home if he comes back."

"I guess you're right, but if you find him call me, and if you don't find him soon, we're going in the car, period. I can't take that kind of risk."

Botaran Night Before Christmas
by Eidan

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

All the stockings were hung by the closet with care,
We don't have a chimney, it'd foul up the air.

Then all of a sudden there arose such a clatter,
“It's not Christmas yet,” I thought — “Now what's the matter?”

Then, what to my wondering eyes should appear
but a blue kid named Toben, and some green kid, I fear.

I couldn't believe it, so I called to my Mom,
“I just got new glasses, but I think something's wrong!”

“There's either two aliens in our neighbor's backyard,
or the school that we go to has us working too hard.”

Jahv-y-Toben-Colocando-Luces-Edn.jpg

They paid me no heed, and went straight to their work.

but then “Happy Thanksgiving!” blurted one with a jerk.

And then putting a finger on a button or node,
he turned on some lights, then I saw them explode!

Christmas_Lights_Overvolt.jpg

“Oh great! Now we've done it! Those were our Christmas lights!
I said we should check them, see, the volts are not right.”

“It's set to 3000, the most here is two-twenty.
All these lights would look great! Now they're not worth a penny.”

“Well it's too late to fix it, I suppose you were right.
so let's pack them back up, and we'll call it a night.”

Then all of a sudden there arose such a noise,
and as you can imagine, everyone blamed the boys.

But what to our wondering eyes should appear...
a miniature sleigh and eight tiny raindeer.

Jahv couldn't believe it, Toben stood there dumbfounded
“They don't call this Thanksgiving, this is Christmas, confound it!”

If you think that the boys were surprised, you should see,
The face of St. Nick, who stood there like a tree.

“I thought I'd seen it all — there were no more surprises!
Either you're a green boy, or those are good disguises!”

Then he looked in his pack and he winked at the boys.
“I bet you wouldn't mind if I gave you these toys!”

“Here, have some chocolate, and a book too, for you each.
I think you'll like this, it's a book called The Sneech.”

“You thought you'd surprise me, but you're still on my list!”
Santa pointed at Jahv, then he held out his fist.

“It's a voltage converter!” the boys both shouted then,
“from 3000 volts to a hundred and ten.”

Voltage_Converter.png

“Don't have a blue Christmas, lest you have one that's green...”
“and a purple one too,” Keyro said, from in-between.

“I didn't forget you,” Santa added with a laugh.
“Here's a package of pencils, and a book that says Math.”

Now laughing for real, he said, “Though those thing are not bad.
If you thought I was serious, you must think I've gone mad.”

Then he gave him some chocolates, and some toys from his bag.
“and I have one more thing, 'cause I know you've been sad.”

“I couldn't believe how far I had to go,
just to find this one thing, there's just one place it grows!”

“The best fruit of all isn't found by your home.
As a matter of fact, there's just one place it's known.”

“So getting some here proved to be quite a task, alas...
on the world you call home, it's just grown in the palace.”

Santa_Space_Transparent.png

“A pink-faced man in a red suit, by the way,
who reached their main palace clear from here, in a sleigh,

was quite a surprise, so imagine their shock!
They just gave me the fruit, and they gave me a lot!”

“Oh, there's just one last thing,” Santa said with a grin.
It's a good set of lights. Take a look! Plug it in!”

“They're all different colors, not just one, like the rest.
Because that's what makes Christmas lights all look their best.”

“It's kind of like people, from Brazil clear to Maine,
how boring we'd be if we all were the same.”

“It's getting late boys, why don't you hit the sack?
I have to go now, but next year I'll be back!”

And he wept a little every morning when he awoke and realized it wasn't there to greet him. The shy, softly spoken little boy had snuggled up to him on their final night at camp, his warm body entwined around the stomach by Fabian's arms, as the two had sat and stargazed together away from the crowded, droning disco.

Patrick had made a deep impression, and when they'd gone their separate ways as Fabian got home, it cut into him just as deeply as the feeling he'd had when his mother and Jeremy's dad had finished, and Jeremy had gone to live with his dad. He'd loved Jeremy, and treated him like the little brother he never had. As an only child, losing Patrick was almost like losing Jeremy; it broke him. It felt like part of him had gone. Again.

Of course he'd done the usual things most kids do when the time comes for them to leave camp - he'd swapped addresses with Patrick, they'd exchanged things like keyrings, t-shirts and bought each other presents - but that wasn't good enough for Fabian. The best present would be for him to be back at camp with Patrick - it was what he wanted right now, more than anything in the world.

As the weeks passed, Patrick still sat at the back of Fabian's mind. As he sat in the library at school one day, Fabian's friends Niklas and Jason came and sat with him. Both shared a cheery "Hello" with him - but you wouldn't have thought so. As far as it appeared to all around, Fabian didn't even realise they were there. Another "Hello", this time with a hand waved in front of his face, finally pulled his attention back from wherever he'd been. "Oh! Hi, guys." Niklas looked into Fabian's eyes, moving his hand like a hypnotist trying to put his victim into a trance. "Where were you, Fabi? Away with the pixies???"

Jason cut in. "I know where he was, Niklas. He was back at camp with Pa..." - he got a slap round the back of the head from Niklas, to educate him not to open his mouth and take the piss. He turned to look back at Fabian, but was met with the sight of his friend's face buried in his hands, and the soft sound of crying. Niklas put his arm soothingly round Fabian's shoulder, and was most surprised when the normally strong boy wrapped both his arms around him, and began to cry deeply and bitterly into Niklas' chest. "I miss him, Nik. I miss Patrick. I just want him back, I want him here, so we can all be together as friends."

Niklas and Jason hadn't realised just *quite* how strongly Fabian had felt about Patrick, but this had really bought it home to them. He'd been talking about the boy for long enough, and now it had reached a head. Something had to be done. Fabian had lost a friend, and lost the will to have fun in the process. This had to be fixed.

Niklas turned his gaze to Jason and mouthed to him "Come back later". Jason gave him a querying look, but did as he was bid and left the two of them alone. Once they were alone, Niklas took Fabian in a proper embrace and slowly, gently rubbed his back while Fabian continued to sob into his shoulder. Niklas put his lips close to Fabian's ear and whispered softly into it;- "Sshhh... Everything will be alright. I understand that you're crying deep inside. Fabi, Patrick must be very special to you for you to miss him this much. I want you to know that I will support you. My ears are open 24 hours a day, and my arms will always be here for you, when you want me to cuddle you. Alright?

175

Fabian lifted his tear stained face away from Niklas' shoulder briefly, and looked directly at his eyes. There was so much he wanted to say to that beautiful speech - so much he wanted to do. There were a thousand words all in his head at the same time, and they all wanted to come out at once - but only six did; "Thanks, Nik. You're a true friend." Despite being in view of the other students in the library, Fabian took his handkerchief out of his pocket, wiped his eyes and blew his nose, then put it back. Next, with all the warmth in his body, he leant into Niklas' side, and kissed him lightly on the cheek. Nik smiled, and blushed red. He didn't know what to think, or whether even TO think.

In the end, he just didn't. He savoured the moment. "Forget standing around" said Fabian warmly, "let's go somewhere quieter." Then, with the two of them holding each others hands, they started to leave the library, ignoring the whistles and jeers from a couple of other students who'd witnessed the kiss; "Yeah, and I bet if I'd punched him in the nose you wouldn't have had a problem with that would you?" Niklas said, just loud enough to hear. All of a sudden the students in question seemed to grow quiet, realizing he was probably right. "I decide who my friends are, not you!" he added in a harsh tone, then they departed the building letting the door slam closed behind them.

It took a little while for Fabian to completely get his composure back, but he did. The rest of the day went relatively smoothly, but Fabian didn't stray far from Niklas, Jason and Jonathan. Sticking by your friends is the best thing to do when you're low. The end of the day came, and Fabian and Niklas walked home from school, again holding hands. To the both of them, it simply felt... right. Fabian got to his door and invited Nik in for a drink since it was quite warm. As he walked through the back door, his mother spotted him, took a letter off the kitchen table and handed it to him. "This came for you in the morning post, dear. I thought you might want to read it, it's come a long way." Fabian sat down at the dinner table with Nik at his side, took the butter knife off the dish and slit along the long edge of the envelope which bore a fair few stamps. He put the knife back and hastily withdrew the envelope's contents. He recognized the postmark, and Niklas could clearly see the excitement building in his face when he opened the letter...

"Freiburg, 14. July.

        Dear Fabian,

Hi! Nice to have the chance to get in contact with you again. I know it's only been a couple of months, but I have so much to tell you, and I am going to have the opportunity to tell you in person! We're coming to your area in the next few weeks, and Mum says that we can meet up. She says she really wants to meet you, and say thank you to you for the way you looked after me and helped me while we were away at camp.

Mum always knew I was shy, and she sent me to the camp to help me try and make friends. I honestly never thought I'd make such a good friend, but I did. It will be great to see you when we come down. I will write to you again closer to the time. Sorry this note is so short, but Mum's just called me downstairs. We're going out to a fancy dinner tonight with my Aunt Maria. I'm sitting here in my miniature penguin suit, looking like I'm going to a wedding, and Dad says I have to put a tie on. Blaargh... :)

Take care, and see you very soon,

Your friend,

Patrick."

Fabian's eyes opened wide. Then wider. He looked like they were going to pop out of his head as Niklas looked on, quizically, wondering what on earth had just happened. "He's coming, Nik! HE'S COMING! HE'S COMING!!!". Fabian began shouting at nearly the top of his voice before Nik calmed him down enough to talk to him. "Who's coming, Fabi?" "Patrick. He's coming, Nik. He's coming here, and I can meet him again!" Without even thinking, he jumped and threw both his arms around Niklas' shoulders at the same time, bringing him to the floor with excitement, and kissed him on the cheek. After their time together earlier in the day, Niklas was pleased to see the warm smile and the glow return to Fabian's face. It was nice to see the return of the friend he knew and remembered.

Early in the evening, the day after getting Patrick's letter, the bouncy feeling he had inside keeping him in high spirits, Fabi sat down. Fountain pen in his hand, paper on his desk, this is what followed:

"Hagen, 19. July.

Dear Patrick,

You can't even begin to guess how happy I am to have got your letter, no matter how long it is; I've been telling my friends Niklas, Jason and Jonathan, all about you and the time we spent together. They're really looking forward to meeting you when you come down. But, I'm looking forward to meeting you even more than they are. I flattened Niklas when I read your letter, I was so excited Come to think of it, I think my other friend Martin would like to meet you too - he's a little younger than you, but he's still a regular bucket of fun!

I'm really pleased too that your Mum is coming down, I have been wanting to meet her and talk for a while. Is your Dad coming too? I know he has to work, but it would be great if you could all come down together. I just don't know what to say; there aren't enough words in English!

It's been painful for me waiting to hear from you; I've missed you like crazy - but it's such a pleasure to know you're coming here. Let me know if there's anything you'd like to do while you're down here, and I will be happy to get something sorted. And you absolutely MUST come have a sleepover with me. I won't take no for an answer!!!

Don't wait too long before you write back, please! You know my address, but if you can't find my house, I've put a map in for you to get here.

I still have Jarvis too, so if you want, bring Snoozie with you for the sleepover. No need to lose out on comfort because you're on holiday, bud!

Be well, I honestly can't wait to see you again.

With best wishes,

Fabian"

Fabian turned the letter over onto a sheet of blotting paper to dry the ink, then folded it carefully. He put it into an envelope from his desk drawer and added the map, as well as a photo of himself with Niklas, Jason, Jonathan, Martin, Keith, Davy and Sniv. He marked it in pen, so he could show Patrick who all his friends were.

176

He closed the envelope flap, and after licking the disgusting gum that tasted of week-old cucumber on the strip, he sealed it. On the front, he wrote Patrick's address, and took it downstairs to give to his Mum. She would be going into town the next morning, and could drop it off at the post office. Fabian gave her some of his pocket money for the stamps, and left the letter standing up on the mantelpiece in the living room.

He went back to his bedroom and sat down on his bed. He looked at the tsatsiki stained t-shirt his friend had worn, and the smell of the fresh mint and the yogurt came back to him. He laid down on the bed, rolled onto one side, and soon drifted off to sleep. His dreams took him away back to camp, but they led him to something new.

He remembered being caught with Patrick in his birthday suit as they got changed after swimming. Instead of just standing there though, he saw his friend's distress, his insecurity, and fell to help him. Standing in front of Patrick, in an effort to hide him away, he bent down and immediately cuddled the soft warm body of his young friend, comforting as it was, as he tried to cover as much as possible, while Patrick's head dropped onto his shoulder. The nakedness didn't matter to him, what was important was the act of protecting him, of concealing him from the eyes of others.

When Fabian looked again, Patrick's face wasn't there. It'd been replaced by Jeremy's. He hugged even harder, ignoring the differences, and at this point, he awoke slowly; his pillow soaked with tears, and his mum by his bedside. She wasn't always that great at showing sympathy, but this time she seemed genuinely concerned - not a first for her, but rare for sure.

As Fabian sat up, his mum wrapped her arms around him and just sat and held him. Not a word passed her lips, but Fabi knew why she was there.

“It's not just Patrick I'm missing Mum, it's Jeremy. There are some things you can't replace, aren't there?” And for the first time since he was 5, Fabian turned on the puppy eyes – the ones that say “Please don't ignore me.” His mum knew what he wanted, and she couldn't turn away from it.

"You really want to see Jeremy again, don't you, honey?"

Fabian nodded. He wiped his tear stained face on his sleeve, inadvertently spreading a streak of snot up it from where his nose had been running. His mum looked at his sleeve, then turned her eyes back to Fabian. A genuinely warm smile spread across her lips, and she reached around Fabian again, and hugged him.

"If that's what you really want, I'm not going to get in your way, darling. I'll call his dad in the morning, and see what we can do."

Fabian's eyes almost glowed at this news, and the tears which had been so freely flowing from his eyes when he woke, stopped. "I'll leave you alone for a little while, I've got to get dinner started. Fish fingers and fries ok for you tonight?" Fabian nodded. His mum smiled at him again, and then left his room.

He swung his legs round to the edge of his bed and looked over to his bedside table; in particular, he looked at the two photographs on it. One was of Patrick, standing in front of their cabin at the camp, dressed in his baggy green t-shirt. The other was of Jeremy, wearing shorts and a soccer top, playing in the park with him, Niklas and Jonathan.

Fabian picked up the one with Jeremy in it and hugged it close to his chest. There was so much he remembered doing with him. The thought that even for one day, he was going to get the chance to see him and maybe even play with him again filled him with excitement.

Putting that one back on his table, he then picked up the one with Patrick in. He looked again into the deep brown eyes.

All he could remember were the fun times, the friendship and above all, the effort he'd put into making sure Patrick had a good time at camp.

It wasn't effort though, was it? It'd been hard getting through the barriers that Paddy had built around himself, that was a certainty. But it was more of a pleasure to see the hesitant little guy come out of his shell, and that pleasure certainly wasn't in any part, effort.

Putting that picture down, Fabian looked at them both in one place. It would be so good if he could have all of his friends like that; all in one place - especially Patrick, Jeremy and Martin. He could see that being a match made in heaven or, at the very least, on a playground...

After what seemed like ages staring at those pictures, Fabian's mum called him down for dinner. He touched both the pictures and headed for the table.

Chapter 1

By Khaos

It was late when Jonathon got off the bus. No one was out and the quiet suburb, where he lived with his aunt, was dark and had very few street lamps and what few there were had already turned off. He hadn't considered the dark when he left, he just knew he couldn't stand being in that house anymore.
He had finally gotten used to not feeling lonely and swore to himself he would never feel that way again but as usual when he went to... that house, he was made to feel dreadfully alone and now he was making the walk home with only his tears to keep him company. His need to be with those who loved him out weighed his fear but the darkness still made him feel paranoid. What was worse was the chill in the air, despite it being summer, and here he was wearing shorts and a tank top, both wet from the tears he'd cried since earlier that afternoon.

163

When he got to his aunts house he stopped in his tracks with a shiver partly from the cool air but mostly because he hadn't noticed how scary the old house looked on dark, starless, nights. He took a deep breathe, mustered his courage and ran for the door! The door was locked and her car wasn't there. Had he realize this was going to happen, he could have carried his key. As it was, it was conveniently locked in his bureau drawer.
'That's right, aunt Cecilia and Randy went to Gran's for the night, they won't be back til tomorrow. I know where I can stay.'
He thought silently but grinned through his tears for a second at his idea. The VanMason's! He was always welcome there! As he started off toward the VanMason's house the smell of wet dirt on the breeze hit his nose.
"Oh no... " he spoke to himself aloud "Its gonna rain..."
A couple of large drops hit his hair and he broke into a run but just as he reached the edge of the VanMason's yard the bottom fell out! Now he was soaked and still had a tree to climb and a window to crawl through.
Jason always kept his window unlocked just in case any of the other boys were in a jam and needed a place to go. They had even nailed boards to the tree outside his window to make a sort of latter to the thick branch that hung just over the part of the roof just under the window.
The thought of spending the night with Jason made him feel warm despite the cold rain but still the sting of his day just wouldn't go away. He made the climb without incident but the roof was slick from the rain and he nearly fell off. His skateboarding skills kicked in and he shifted his weight forward so instead of falling backward to the ground, he landed with a thud on the roof and scratched up his hands and knees on the shingles.

164

He crawled to the window with whimper and a couple of tears 'What else could go wrong? It'll be just my luck if the window is locked' He put a little pressure in an upward push and the window slid up.
Thank God it was opened as usual. He felt he couldn't take another disappointment tonight.
Jon crawled through the window onto Jason's desk, smearing a mix of blood, water and a mossy muck from the tree and shingles on it.
He set his back pack on the floor and stripped out of his wet clothes. Luckily his bag was waterproof. He slipped out into the hall to the bathroom and got cleaned up. His scrapes burned a little as he wiped them with the sanitary wipes, washing his hands stung too. When he had dried off he pulled on his fresh briefs and a tank top and tiptoed back down the hall.
When he got back to Jason's room he stood and watched him sleep for a minute. Jason looked so much younger when he slept maybe even a little cuter. Then he pulled back the sheet and slipped into the bed with his back to Jason who was already curved into a perfect spoon as if asking Jonathon to lay down and be held.
Jason's arms automatically wrapped around Jon in a tight. embrace like an ingrained reflex as he slid into place.
Jonathon sighed deeply. He needed that, the warm feel of Jason's arms. This is where he felt he belonged.
The one place he knew for sure he fit perfectly, with Jason. His head fit so neatly under Jason's chin and on Jason's left shoulder. His shoulders perfectly lined against Jason's ribs and his back against his belly. Hip to pelvis, the curve of their knees like a gloves and his feet atop Jason's feet. An absolutely perfect fit.
He snuggled in but as comfortable as he was he just couldn't sleep.
No matter how happy being with Jason made him, he still could not stop thinking about the events leading to his early trip home. The longer he lay there the more he thought about it causing all those horrible feelings to rush back so he just laid there and quietly cried.
Jason woke up around 2am to the feeling of body heat pressed against him.
He had been dreaming of holding Jonathon while they slept but when he opened his eyes he was startled to find his dream was real!
Perhaps the most confusing was he knew it could not be possible because Jonathon was supposed to be at his mother's for the weekend, yet here he lay wrapped up tight in his arms!
Jason sat up and looked down at Jon, expecting him to be asleep but what he found was a tear stained face looking up at him.
Johnathon rolled over and buried his face in Jason's chest, sobbing.
"What's wrong Jon, are you okay?"
But Jonathon was sobbing to hard to speak so Jason just held him tight and rubbed his back. "Its okay Jon, you're with me now." he kissed Jonathon's head, smelling the sweet sent of his silky blonde hair, then kissed his eyes as if to kiss the tears away.
Then he started playing with Jon's hair, instinctively knowing that this would soothe him.
Jonathon nuzzled his chest in response.
That was all he needed to finally fall asleep, a little conscious comfort from someone who cared about him.
Jason continued playing with Jon's hair until he too was fast asleep

The next morning they woke in a tangled up mess. Jason turned slightly and leaned forward for to say good morning, and kissed that beautiful forehead that lay next to his.
Jonathon stretched and yawned. His eyes still poofy and raw from crying.
"What's wrong Jon? Are you okay? " Jason said as he rubbed Jon's shoulders.
Jon looked down toward their feet. "Why don't they love me Jason? Why can't they love ME too like they love my sisters?"
The tears began to flow again but he managed to choke back the sobbing so he could speak. He told Jason everything, how his mom promised to spend the day with him, he had even gotten there early yesterday morning to make sure they'd have time but as usual she left him alone and tended to his little sisters while he was sent to play outside, alone in the yard and told not to come in until he was called for. His dad didn't even acknowledged he was there and his is older sister was out with her boyfriend all day. When she got home she barely said two words to him.
He hadn't even eaten supper because they had forgotten he was outside! He disobeyed and went inside because it had gotten dark and he found they had already eaten and gone to bed! So he got his bag, left a note on his bed and took the night bus home.
"There must be something wrong with me! They gave me away like a dog and now they ignore me worse than ever!" Jonathon sobbed but no tears come out. He had cried til he had no more tears to cry.
Jason didn't know what to say so he held him tighter in his arms for a moment to think. "Its okay Jon, even if no one else in the world does, I love you."
The weight of his own words caused Jason to gulp hard. He had finally done it. He told Jonathon how he felt.
His face turned red and his gut began to turn as he waited for Jon's response. "But how can anyone love me if even my own mom doesn't! Am I really so awful?" Jonathon either didn't pick up on what Jason said or he was to hurt to accept it.
Jason swallowed his fear and hugged him close again. "There's nothing wrong with you Jon, its them! Anyone would love you! You're... You're beautiful... Just beautiful. And I do love you!"
Jon turned to look at Jason, pain still streaked on his face. "I know you do, but why? Is it just because you think I'm 'beautiful'?"
Jason swallowed again, afraid to say the wrong thing. He reached for Jon's chin and held his face were he couldn't look away. This was it, the defining moment of truth that could change everything between them Jason thought and with a deep breath he answered. "Well, in a way. You're..." He was unable to finish as Jon jerked away, grabbed his backpack and ran for the door.
Even his closest friend only loved. him for something superficial! He ran down the stairs and out the door, right past Mrs. VanMason, who saw only a blond blur. 'Its true then, no one loves me for who I am. There is something wrong with me.' He thought as he opened the door, shot through the yard and down the street. He didn't know where he was going he just knew he wouldn't go back.

Martin walked into the dome tent followed closely by Keith. They walked into a rather heated argument which seemed to have the two older Botaran children, Jahv and Toben (each wearing rather grimy work overalls which looked like old ones of Davy's), on one side and Niklas, Jason, Fabian and Davy on the other side. The two aliens were arguing in favor of something while the other boys were arguing against it.

Keyro sat on a large, gold-colored cushion a little way off to one side of the group, his head in his hands watching the argument. As was normal for Botaran children, he wore nothing but the resigned look on his face. Morik sat next to Keyro on the same cushion, in a similar pose and with a similar expression on his face, although he wore slightly more than Keyro — namely, briefs in a glossy, swirling blue and yellow color combination. Prince Arion stood a little way to the other side of Keyro, his arms folded and the expression on his face difficult to read, although he seemed both amused and concerned by the scene in front of him. The jumble of voices went something like this:

Davy: “...all the harebrained ideas...”

Niklas: “...can't be serious!”

Toben: “...perfectly safe.”

Fabian: “...get us in trouble again!”

Jahv: “...tested it carefully...”

Jason: “...not going through that again.”

The chatter ceased as the arguing boys noticed the new arrivals. Davy spoke first, waving one arm toward the two standing Botaran boys. “Keith! You're not going to believe what these fools have done!”

Keith folded his arms, glared at Jahv and Toben and growled, “they've built another spaceship and they want us to go into space with them again!”

Everyone stared at Keith. Prince Arion raised one eyebrow.

Keith's mouth had begun to twitch. Suddenly he realised that nobody else was smiling and his expression immediately became serious. “What!!? I was joking! You mean those crazy aliens have really done it!?”

“Uh... yeah,” murmured Jahv, a little nervously.

Martin looked at Keith, looked at the expressions on the other boys' faces and then groaned, “oh no!” He sat down heavily on the floor of the dome tent. His last trip into space with the aliens had been both frightening and embarrassing.

“That,” remarked Prince Arion, “is exactly what Keyro said when he found out.” His expression became... not exactly tender, but at least not as gloomy and brooding as usual. His behavior toward his companions had become slightly more friendly and less stand-offish since Toben and he had joined forces to rescue the other boys from the renegade Botaran Magistrate, Varek.

“And I meant it,” inserted Keyro, still looking resigned. “If there's some way to stuff up a new spaceship, my brother is the one to find the way!” Jahv gave him a hurt look, prompting Keyro to add, “don't look at me like that! We both know that your imagination exceeds your abilities. I love you, but I'm being realistic and I wish you would too.”

“But now he has me and, immodest though it may sound, my imagination doesn't exceed my abilities,” Toben replied.

Keyro shook his head. “You're a good engineer, Toben, but Jahv helped you to build the ship and I can't feel right about trying it out with our friends on board. No matter how well you've tested it, something can still go wrong.”

“You aren't going to leave us?” Martin suddenly piped up, anxiously. Everyone looked at him as he stood and walked over to Jahv and Toben, his hands out in an almost pleading gesture. “I don't want you to go! I'd rather go with you, even if you're going into space again.” Martinseemed to have suddenly overcome his fear of space travel, although he also seemed to have the wrong idea of what the aliens were planning.

Jahv hugged Martin while Toben, who was not yet as comfortable with such a display of affection as the other Botaran boys, just put one hand comfortingly on Martin's shoulder.

“Of course we aren't leaving. Not for good. And we don't want to go on a journey — even a short one like this one — without our friends,” answered Jahv.

Keith groaned, threw his hands up in the air and exclaimed, “okay, I guess we're going! When and where and how long is it going to take? I suppose we'll end up naked somehow, somewhere along the way but never mind that; it's a tradition that we always end up naked when we travel into space. Why should this time be any different?”

This pronouncement was followed by a snicker from Keyro then a kind of choking sound from Morik as he tried to stifle his giggles. After that, it wasn't long before the whole party was laughing. Even Keith, although he felt that he had only been half joking.

* * * * *

Of course there was an argument about telling Davy's parents. Davy at first insisted on telling them what was being planned and was supported by Prince Arion, who thought it disrespectful not to tell the adults. The other boys pointed out that Davy's parents would probably flatly refuse to permit the Earth boys to go on the voyage.

Eventually, Davy decided that he should stay behind and then, since his parents were not directly responsible for the other boys, there would be no need to tell them about the journey. Niklas and Jason then decided to stay behind to keep Davy company. Morik never felt comfortable inside an enclosed space such as a spaceship and so decided to stay on Earth as well and to take turns with the others in monitoring the journey on the Botaran subspace communicator in the dome tent. Martin was insistent on going so Keith was going too. Fabian was in the mood for an adventure and so very much wanted to go also. Prince Arion, in spite of his disapproval, decided that the honorable thing to do was to accompany his friends on the journey.

Dark_Past_001_New_Spaceship.jpg

The new spaceship was garaged in an annex to the dome tent, accessed by a door from the main tent. Like the rest of the dome tent the annex was, due to Botaran science, bigger on the inside than on the outside. It needed to be, since the spaceship was about four times as long and almost twice the width of the first ship which Jahv had designed and built (the ship which had, for some still-unknown reason, exploded shortly after landing back on Earth at the end of its first voyage into space, fortunately without harming anything or anyone else since Jahv had managed to put up a force shield around the ship before it blew up).

One thing which all the boys noticed was that the new ship was far more ornate than would be expected from the traditionally efficient but plain Botaran design. The engine nacelles were the color of polished bronze and had spiral flutings along their sides, giving the illusion of great speed and power even while the ship sat motionless in the hangar. The top and underside of the ship were silver with a wide, separating gold stripe in the middle. The middle of the roof and the underside were embossed with a large, gold disk bearing the silhouette image of a silvereagle in flight, as seen from above. The whole ship had been polished almost to a mirror finish and gleamed under the lights in the hangar, making for an impressively beautiful sight.

Spacesuits had already been replicated for everyone. As the boys who were going on the journey changed into their suits, Jahv proudly described the ship. “The basic design is a standard Botaran small commercial cruiser, similar in most respects to Toben's ship, but smaller. We modified the design to give it more passenger space and less cargo space, and Toben made a few modifications to the engines to give it a bit more speed.”

“...and our resident Dorrian helped to make it look pretty,” finished Toben teasingly, grinning at Morik. Like most Botarans, Toben felt that making a spaceship look ornate was rather a waste of time although secretly, he quite liked the results.

“I guessed Morik must have helped put it together,” commented Fabian. “He's the one most likely to take the trouble to make a spaceship look nice.”

Morik shrugged and spoke in a matter-of-fact manner. “I can't help it. If I see something ugly, it gives me a feeling like pain. I have to try to make it look better.”

“You did a good job,” said Keyro comfortingly, putting one arm around Morik momentarily and sharing a smile with him. Keyro briefly glanced side-on at Keith, then made an elaborate attempt to look innocent. Fortunately Keith didn't notice, otherwise he would have realized that something was 'going on' and that it involved him in some way.

The boarding hatch was near the front of the ship, directly in the middle of the gold stripe separating the silver top and bottom halves and the door bore a silver eagle image identical to the ones on the top and bottom of the ship.

“Why didn't you tell us you were building this thing?” asked Jason as they walked to the boarding ramp to see the others off. “And how did you manage to keep it a secret all this time?” He looked at Keyro, “Did you know about this?” then at Morik, “you must have known if you helped with the design!”

“Only in the final stages,” replied Keyro. “These two conspirators,” (indicating Jahv and Toben), “managed to replicate most of the parts while the rest of us were asleep or outside. Later on, we knew something was up but they just locked the hangar — we didn't know it was being used as a hangar, then — and said it was a surprise and to wait and see. Eventually, Morik managed to sneak into the hangar when Toben left the door unlocked for a few minutes, then the secret was out. After that, Morik helped with the design for the final fit-out and we all decided to keep it as a surprise for the rest of you.”

“More like a shock,” grumbled Keith in an undertone as Jahv ran up the ramp and stood just inside the airlock. If any of the boys heard Keith's comment, they chose to ignore it.

“Welcome aboard the Silver Eagle,” announced Jahv as the others came to the foot of the ramp. “Name suggested by Prince Arion. He seems to have developed a strange affection for some of your flight-capable Earth life.”

“I wouldn't call it affection,” Arion replied as he walked up the ramp to enter the spaceship. “I can't understand how anyone could feel affection for a creature which eats carrion, but I do admire the eagle's flight skills. I've learned new flight maneuvers by observing them, while I had thought I'd already perfected my abilities.” The other boys exchanged surprised glances as they followed him up the ramp. Prince Arionwasn't known for giving praise, particularly in regard to his adopted planet.

“This will just be a short hop, there and back again,” said Jahv. “We'll be heading out of the Galactic Ecliptic, for safety's sake. No suns, planets or suchlike to bump into out there even in the unlikely event that something does go wrong.” Then he went on, “come have a look at the ship before we leave.”

“Out of the what?” asked Davy as the boys began the short walk along the passageway to the ship's control room at the front.

“Think of the Galaxy as being shaped a bit like two shallow bowls, one upside-down on top of the other,” replied Keyro, illustrating by cupping his hands and placing them palm-to-palm one on top of the other. Everyone paused to listen to his explanation. “Normally, we'd take a course which would keep us inside the area enclosed by the bowls since that's where all of the planets are, but if we call the bowl closest to Earth's north pole 'up' and the other 'down', we'll be heading up, which will take us outside the area enclosed by the bowls — outside the Galaxy. Like Jahv said; there's nothing to run into out there in the Intergalactic Void, so it'll be safer.”

“It sounds dull,” commented Keith as they resumed walking. “Exactly the type of space voyage we could do with, after the last few we've been through!”

The boys entered the control room and stopped, open-mouthed at what they saw there. Many of the controls were designed so that they included a model of the face or head of one of the boys. Jahv and Toben both grinned at the sight of the other boys' stunned faces. Morik was obviously trying to look innocent. Jahv went over to the control panel and began pointing to various controls.

“This is the communications console,” said Jahv, pointing to a representation of Niklas's smiling face in the middle of the array of consoles. “Here is the environmental and external sensor control panel,” — indicating a console just to the right of the communications console, colored the same shade of lavender as Keyro; “this is the navigation station,” — pointing to a green-hued control panel the shade of his own skin, situated just to the left of the communications console; “and these are the atmospheric and space-flight drive controls” he finished, indicating a Toben-shaded light-blue console to the left of the navigation console, on which just one handle had a face on the knob at the end — Keith's face. There were other panels with other controls, but Jahv didn't bother explaining any of them.

“What's that handle do?” asked Keith, curiously.

Jahv coughed, obviously suppressed a smile then replied, “attitude control.”

Keith just stood there for a moment, his mouth hanging open. There was a pause, during which every other boy in the cabin seemed to hold his breath anxiously.

Then Keith put his hand over his face, shook his head and broke into a chuckle, breaking the suspense. The other boys soon joined in the laughter.

“I'll bet that was your idea, you cheeky Dorrian,” said Keith to Morik. “Come on! Confess!” he sighed, but with a smile.

“Sorry, I just couldn't resist,” apologized Morik, still giggling. “After all, you do have an attitude but you also control it — at least when you're with us. I thought it too appropriate not to do it!” He giggled again before finally managing to control himself.

“And now,” said Jahv, still chuckling, “perhaps those who are staying should disembark and the rest of us can strap in for the Silver Eagle's maiden voyage?”

“I get the window seat!' announced Keyro, heading for the left (port) side of the ship.

“Hey,” objected Martin, “I wanted the window seat!”

“You can have the other one,” said Keyro, pointing to the other side (starboard) of the control cabin. Farewells were exchanged as Niklas,Jason, Davy and Morik headed for the exit.

In addition to the seats behind the control panels, there were a total of twelve passenger seats in the wide control cabin. The seats were in two rows of six and in groups of two, with space for more rows to be added, later. Keyro took the window seat on the left and Fabian sat next to him. The middle two seats were empty while Keith and Martin sat on the right. Prince Arion preferred to sit in the second row and took the seat behind Keith.

With everyone seated and strapped in, Jahv and Toben went through a boringly extensive pre-flight checklist before taking off.

Finally, Jahv announced the last few procedures:

“Boarding hatch airlock door closed: Check!”

“Boarding ramp retracted: Check!”

“Hangar bay door, open...” (above them, the roof seemed to part like flower petals opening, revealing blue sky) “... Check!”

“Cloaking field on: Check. Ready to launch, pilot?”

“Pilot ready: Check!” announced Toben.

“Launch!” directed Jahv.

Toben operated a lever and the hangar seemed to drop away from the ship with surprising speed, vanishing completely as the ship passed through the cloaking field which kept the dome tent invisible to outside eyes. At the same time, they were all pressed more firmly (although not uncomfortably) into their seats by the launch.

“Huh...” grunted Keyro, sounding surprised.

“What's wrong?” asked Jahv, turning to his brother. Toben was in control of the ship, so Jahv could now direct his attention elsewhere.

“I thought I felt a slight gravity pulse when we took off,” said Keyro, sounding concerned but uncertain.

Jahv frowned. “Are you sure? That shouldn't be possible.”

“I know,” replied Keyro, “and I'm not really sure. It was so quick.”

Jahv turned to Fabian, sitting next to Keyro. “Did you feel anything?”

“Well, I might have felt something, for just an instant when we took off, but I didn't realise I'd felt anything until Keyro mentioned that he felt something. What's a 'gravity pulse' feel like, anyway?”

“It's difficult to explain, but it's like the feeling you get when a car accelerates,” answered Keyro. “You get pressed back in your seat until the car stops accelerating. On a spaceship, the inertia dampers are supposed to reduce it to just a slight pressure. It's not really gravity of course, but it has a similar effect so that's what we call it. I thought that the pressure I felt was, for a moment, stronger than the inertia dampers are supposed to allow, but I'm not sure.”

Toben had been concentrating on the controls as the ship sped upward through the Earth's atmosphere, the blue sky darkening first to purple and then to black as the ship approached space, but he had also been listening to the conversation.

“Jahv?” Toben queried, “should we abort the test? Just in case?”

Jahv thought deeply, scratching his head just in front of one antenna, but it was Keyro who replied.

“I'm not sure there really is a problem. It was so quick, it could have just been my imagination.” Punctuating this comment came an exasperated sigh from Keith and a rather sarcastic mutter of “never a dull moment".

Jahv only frowned at Keith but continued to scratch as he thought. It could be nothing — but then again, it could be a serious problem.

Fabian added, “...and I don't think I felt anything at all. I really don't want this voyage to be cut short. This is an adventure!”

Jahv stopped scratching. “Okay, we'll continue with the test but, Toben, make sure you stay on the conservative side of all safety standards, okay?”

“And I was wanting to see how fast this thing could go with the engine modifications I made to it,” lamented Toben, “but you're right. Better to be safe than to be sorry, as the Earth proverb goes. By the way, we've cleared the atmosphere.”

Jahv turned back to his controls. “Plotting the course for warp speed,” he announced then, a moment later, “ready.”

“Uh, Jahv?” queried Toben, looking at the settings transmitted to his console from Jahv's. “Do you realise you haven't set the termination interval? Are you trying to reach another galaxy?”

“It's deliberate.” affirmed Jahv. “Accelerating to warp speed puts a huge strain on the inertia dampers and decelerating out of warp does the same thing. I figure if there's a problem with an inertia damper, it's safer to stay at warp speed while we fix it before trying to decelerate.”

Toben shrugged his agreement, then moved a control. A bar-graph style display lit up with just enough bars to reach, but not pass, a mark on one side of the display. “Ready for minimum acceleration to warp speed,” he announced.

There was a slight hesitation before Jahv instructed, “engage warp drive.” Toben pressed a control, just as another half-sarcastic mutter was heard from Keith, “...angels and ministers of grace defend us,” which was the ending to a very old-fashioned prayer.

There was a rocketing whine from the engines and the stars became bright streaks of light in the windows as all of the boys were pressed back into their seats by the acceleration. Suddenly there was a 'pop' sound from the extreme left of the control console and Keyro screamed, a rather strangled-sounding scream. Fabian gave a stifled shriek, then was silent. Jahv turned quickly towards them. “Keyro? Fabian?” Keithand Martin were also calling out to them.

Keyro spoke in gasps, “Big... gravity... pulse! Fabian... hurt!”

Jahv hit the quick release on his seat belt and ran over to the window seats where he opened a small container in the wall and took out a package of strange devices. He waved one device near Fabian and Keyro in turn, watching a small display on the device as he did so. Fabian was obviously unconscious.

“There's nothing seriously wrong with you, Keyro. Just strained muscles and shock. But Fabian has cracked and broken ribs and one has punctured a lung!” As he spoke, Jahv put on what looked like a pair of wraparound sunglasses from the package, quickly unfastened the front of Fabian's spacesuit then began waving two more devices over Fabian's chest, one device in each hand, peering intently at Fabian through the 'sunglasses' as he did so A pale, blue-white glow came from each device and seemed to stream out towards Fabian's chest like a mist. The other boys had by this time undone their safety belts and were gathering around anxiously, watching what Jahv was doing.

Toben put the ship on autopilot and came over too, taking a similar package from the open container. He took out of the package another pair of the 'sunglasses' and another device like the ones Jahv was already using.

“You do the ribs and I'll mend the lung and blood vessels,” said Toben, putting on the glasses and holding the glowing device over Fabian's chest, carefully avoiding Jahv's slowly waving arms.

“Fine,” murmured Jahv, obviously concentrating on what he was doing.

Keyro's breathing was evening out. He released his seat belt and turned to Jahv and Toben. “Will he be all right?”

“I think so,” replied Toben, his tone confident. “His body is actually easier to repair than a Botaran's, which this medical kit was designed to deal with. Jahv is doing a good job of re-joining the rib bones and I've already managed to stop the worst of the internal bleeding. I just have to wait for Jahv to finish repairing the ribs before I seal off that punctured lung.” Then he added, to Jahv, “will he need the Oxygenator?”

“Probably not,” murmured Jahv, still concentrating. “The other lung is okay and I'm nearly finished.”

Keyro anticipated the question from the other boys and explained, “the Oxygenator uses transmat technology to transport carbon dioxide out of the lungs and oxygen into them without the patient having to actually breathe.” He returned his attention to Jahv and Toben and to the still unconscious Fabian.

A moment later, with a final, slow flourish, Jahv turned off the devices in his hands and put them and the 'sunglasses' back into the package. Without any prompting, Toben moved the device he was holding back and forth, then up and down across Fabian's chest.

“Done!” Toben announced. “He might be a bit sore for a day or two but there won't be any lasting problems.” As if in response, Fabian opened his eyes and groaned slightly.

“I feel like I was just hit by a truck!” Fabian complained.

“Since you've never, to my knowledge, been hit by a truck, I don't see how you can know what it feels like,” replied Jahv, pedantically. “May you never have the opportunity to make the comparison, anyway. What did happen was bad enough: Something is wrong with one of the inertia dampers! Keyro, being a Botaran, was tough enough to withstand the gravity pulse without harm but you were in a bad way. You'll be okay now although you'll probably feel the after-effects for a while. Since you were closer to the middle of the cabin than Keyro, you wouldn't have felt the full effects of the gravity pulse just like the rest of us only felt the normal acceleration pressure.”

Toben had turned his attention to the part of the control panel nearest to the left side of the ship and was using a tool to unfasten it. He took out a circuit board and inspected it.

“Wow! The overload compensator circuit has blown a transistor — literally. There's practically nothing left of it! Now I wonder what...” Toben left the sentence unfinished as he examined the rest of the circuit. Then...

“Jahv...?” queried Toben with an ominous note in his voice.

“Yes?” prompted Jahv, a trifle uneasily.

“Isn't this inertia damper supposed to have a fifty-five microfarad capacitor in the feedback circuit?”

“Uhhh... yeah. What does it have?”

“Five-hundred and fifty microfarad,” replied Toben. “The wrong capacitor in the feedback circuit must have caused the inertia damper to react too slowly to nullify the gravity pulse. The overload compensator... umm... overloaded.”

Jahv looked both stunned and mortified. “Keyro was right! I did it again, didn't I? I nearly killed my brother and one of my friends, just because I can't follow instructions!” He looked ready to cry.

“But,” objected Toben, “I should have checked everything before installing the equipment and it was your insistence on following strict safety protocols which helped to minimize any harm. Don't forget that! I was going to use full acceleration just for the fun of it. If I'd done that with this inertia damper not working properly, both Keyro and Fabian would have... well... I don't like to think of it!”

“Squashed like bugs?” queried Fabian, indicating that he understood the essential facts of the discussion. He gently rubbed his chest. It was still a bit sore.

“Like bugs hitting a car windshield,” confirmed Keyro.

“Yuck!” commented Fabian.

“Agreed!” muttered Keyro, shuddering slightly at the thought. Then he added, “not that it would have made a difference, because the whole port side of the ship would probably have sheared away under the strain leaving the control cabin open to space!” He didn't need to elaborate further.

There was a short, uncomfortable pause before Keith asked, “what now?”

“Now,” announced Toben, “we fix this inertia damper so that we can decelerate safely and make our return journey.” He took one step toward the rear of the ship then stopped, quite an extraordinary expression on his face. “Uh-oh! Umm, Jahv?”

Jahv groaned and hung his head. “Don't tell me, let me guess: We forgot to bring the spare parts!”

“Uhh, yeah! Good guess,” muttered Toben, unhappily.

There was another uncomfortable pause before Keith, again, was the one to break the silence.

“So, what are we going to do? There must be some way of fixing that thing!”

“Not without the correct parts,” said Jahv, dolefully. “And all three replicators we have on the ship at the moment only have food programs. None of them are designed to replicate hardware. The most we can do is send out a subspace radio message to let the others know what's happened to us, but there's nothing they can do to help.”

Lowering his head again in despair, Jahv continued, “if we try to decelerate out of warp before we repair that inertia damper the gravity pulse will tear the ship apart, and unless we drop out of warp nobody else can get help to us. My stupid mistake has doomed us to exile in the Intergalactic Void for the rest of our lives!” He covered his face with his hands and began to cry, and none of the other boys knew how to comfort him.
